Brief
History – Kerri J. Law
Kerri J. Law was born and raised in Thunder
Bay. She graduated from Lakehead University in 1991 with an Honours Bachelor
of Commerce degree (first
class standings). She immediately began working at KPMG Peat Marwick
Thorne (now Ernst & Young) as a junior accountant/auditor. While
at KPMG she specialized in auditing non profit entities, especially municipalities.
In May of 1994 she earned her CA designation.
In May of 1995, Kerri left KPMG to become the Director of Finance and
Administration (General Manager) of the Lakehead University Student Union
(LUSU). While there, she gained significant management accounting and
general management skills. She was responsible for overseeing the entire
Student Union operation and ensuring the entity remained financially
viable. She gained skills in: operating and managing a small business
and a large restaurant/bar, implementing internal controls, cutting costs,
budgeting, financial statement preparation and human resources management.

In January of 2003, Kerri decided to open KJL Accounting. The varied
skills Kerri gained through work and at school will be well suited
to her goals for KJL Accounting. She has gained valuable management
experience working outside of the public accounting sector and is
interested in continuing to practice management accounting. Kerri
has contacts in the banking, insurance and legal fields. She knows
the importance of timely collection of accounts receivables and knows
various tactics to aid in collection. She is intimately familiar
with all types of government remittances including payroll related,
GST, PST and income taxes. Most of all, she enjoys working with people
and taking on new challenges.

Kerri looks forward to hearing from prospective
clients. Please give her a call or send an e-mail to arrange a time to
discuss what KJL Accounting
can do for your small business. You won’t be disappointed.
KJL
Accounting
KJL Accounting is a home-based, sole proprietorship owned and operated
by Kerri J. Law.
KJL Accounting will generally operate Monday to Friday from 9:00 am
until 5:00 pm. However, there will be no official office hours as no
clients are expected to come to the home based office. Because no one
needs to be at the office, the hours can be more flexible. Kerri will
work evenings and weekends if necessary and will work her schedule around
client needs.
KJL Accounting is unique in that Kerri is willing to work either at
her own office or the client’s office. Depending on the client’s
needs and space, it maybe more efficient to work out of the client’s
office as that is where all the records are stored. As well, by working
at the client’s office, Kerri will be able to establish a rapport
and a level of comfort and trust that may not be formed as easily without
regular contact.
Where the work is performed will ultimately be decided by the client.
KJL Accounting prides itself on its convenient, client friendly service.
KJL Accounting plans to concentrate on providing
part-time Controller services to small businesses in Thunder Bay who
may not need or cannot afford a full-time Controller or who require more
accounting expertise than they can provide themselves. The businesses
may be run by entrepreneurs who are not interested in doing the accounting
or may just need better accounting and financial statements to satisfy
their banks or their investors. A part-time controller provides bookkeeping
services, but also provides additional services such as office management,
policy development, training, financial statement preparation and management
advice. KJL Accounting will focus on the client who needs part-time financial
and management services so he or she can focus energies and budget on
the things that make the client’s business a success. By bringing
in a part-time controller, the client can focus on growing his business
full-time.
These part-time controller services will most likely be required once
weekly with potentially more time required at month end and year end,
depending on the size of the business. KJL Accounting will become thoroughly
familiar with each client’s business so that the best services
possible can be provided.
KJL Accounting is also targeting small businesses that do not require
the full service, part-time controller package. For these clients, Kerri
may just do the bookkeeping and payroll or help prepare budgets or train
staff how to use Simply Accounting or do a bank reconciliation. Additionally,
KJL Accounting could be hired to write accounting or human resource policy
manuals, act as a project manager, consult on employee benefit plans
or to develop and implement internal controls.
KJL Accounting is also interested in helping clients with their business
start-ups. For most new businesses, a significant area of weakness is
in gathering financial information. Kerri would help these entrepreneurs
put together financial forecasts and cash flow statements for their business
plans. She could also help newer businesses, already in operation, put
together requests for financing from a lending institution.
KJL Accounting offers a wide range of services. Please contact Kerri
to find out what she can do for your business.
